Red River Rivalry - By The Numbers
It’s Red River Rivalry week! This year’s annual battle between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl inside the State Fair of Texas in Dallas is the 199th meeting between the two teams. Let’s take a look at this year’s matchup and how each team stacks up by the numbers.
Both teams come in with a record of 5-0 and this is the first time since 2011 that both teams enter the game undefeated. Both teams come in ranked in the AP Poll, Texas at #3, Oklahoma at #12.
The combined record of Texas’ previous five opponents is 17-8 while Oklahoma’s five previous opponents combined record is only 13-12. Texas has obviously played a tougher schedule with a 2-0 record against Top 25 teams (Alabama and Kansas) which is further cemented by their strength of schedule which ranks 16th in the nation while Oklahoma’s strength of schedule is a measly 82nd and the Sooners have yet to play a team inside the Top 25. What do the rest of the numbers say? (national ranking in parenthesis)
